Delta Therapy Dogs

          The last two months of school, the Delta Therapy Dogs of the Suncoast Humane Society will be coming to most of our reading classes on Mondays.  Students will be able to read with a dog and their trainer for 20 minutes each visit.  Both the dogs and their owners must go through extensive training and testing to earn the designation of Delta Therapy Dog.

The owners are required to go through reading strategies classes so they are able to assist students with their reading.
   Why read with dogs?

This program has been used throughout the country for many years and has many documented successes of students improving their reading scores.  Through reading in a relaxed atmosphere with man’s best friend, children are able to gain confidence in their reading abilities.  Many students also develop a more positive attitude towards reading in general.
